April 22, 2013 EarthDay Celebration

The clock ticks down to another earth day celebration. Now it is here. We passed the Mayan Calendar cycle of events and warnings. Although the planet still spins, we have see tremendous disasters take place in the year 2012.

Tsunamis, flooding, nuclear explosions and radiation contamination, oil spills, volcano eruptions, tornadoes and hurricanes. Even though economic challenges loom near daily, we must also pay attention to the effects on our lives from impending natural changes and man-made changes.

If we can make one little contribution to improve conditions, then we must take action. Taking stock of our lives and how we all contribute to the whole universe and relationship of the planets. You will hear these days of conscious living require us to take a part in our future.

A new slogan "The Earth Won't Wait" implies the time to act is running out. We cannot push aside or put aside the disasters, destruction, and poisoning that we learn about every day. But, we can still have hope, if we act now!

What will happen next? It all depends upon us, every one of us. I've heard my friend say the children have misplaced their priority. They are being taught that the planet takes precedence over human life. She tells me they learn the whales, dolphins and other life must be cared for with disregard of the humans, who do not have as much right to live on the planet. She's afraid. I don't know if these concepts and ideas are getting out only in the United States or have been spreading globally.

I believe all living creatures are sacred, but with wisdom, understanding of the repercussions of our actions, the destruction of the planet as we know it has already begun. All of the natural disasters continue to cause further destruction and disperse pollutants, radiation and cause erosion of fertile lands.

If we use natural products in our buildings, as nutritional organic foods to enhance our internal environment, and utilize the available natural sustainable sources of energy we can truly make this world a better place. The ideas can be found in the slogans below. Only we can make them come to life when we live by those words. Make Earth Day Every Day in our lives.

LIGHTS OUT FOR ONE HOUR BECOMES AN ANNUAL EVENT

This Global Event occurs during the month of the EarthDay Celebration. People turn off their lights and let the stars shine in the sky. Each year this event is recorded with celebrations and hoopla, while circling satellites snap photos. The spectacular darkening of the Blue Market can be seen on video and in still shots. Retro for 2010 EarthDay

"We Are The World" has come back as a theme for 2010. It started with the Haiti Earthquake and helping our fellow human beings recover from grave disaster. A Disney throw back to the "Bambi" character, honoring Walt Disney, focusing on our connection to nature in the oceans, forests, and where ever animals inhabit the earth will open in theaters near you.

Our attention spans do not last for a very long time and it is necessary for marketing agents to constantly refresh old ideas and tweak the message.

Annual Commemoration Turns A Lightbulb On In Our Heads

What’s a slogan?

Slogans are phrases that help people key in to the theme and major concept of an organization, candidate, campaign. Sometimes the slogan is called a motto.

These Key Phrases are used repeatedly by supporters to ingrain the message into the media and their audience. It makes the product, candidate, organization or campaign memorable. It's kind of like a 'jingle' that repeats in your head after you sing the notes.

Since EarthDay 2009, I've become more active in creating awareness of EarthDay and environmentalism. Social networking has made that possible.

I've actually begun turning the lights off in every room of the house when I walk out in order to save a few cents, which I can contribute to a good cause. I personally feel better about myself while saving valuable resources.

Earth Day Effects All Humanity

Earth Day is a Birthday That We Can All Celebrate.

We all use the G-d given resources of this world. Let's not squander, soil or overuse the soil, air and salty oceans and fresh waterways that nurture and support us. Let's give thanks by preserving and healing what we have damaged. We must clean up our home.

The first EarthDay occured on April 22, 1970. This is the 40th year of our commemoration. How can we make a difference? What kind of creative slogan would summarize where we are in this time-line?

Our youth have many poster contests, writing article assignments and slogan campaigns. Of all people, young people feel the pressure of the limitations and destruction of our natural resources.

Earth Day Helps The Environment By Making Us Aware of Our Spending Habits

Keep Holding On: Slogans Inspire Us to Fight For Our Cause

Evaluating The Slogans

  • Go back and look over the slogans. They have to be meaningful to everyone. There are a number of them that fall into a sub-category. They may talk about a part of the environment - the trees, water, waste, air, land. They may talk about our habit patterns. They make be action oriented or passive. They could also be geared toward the negative aspect or positive aspect of how we act or the results of our actions.

  • Does it make your Stop and Think? I had to think about "Phone First." What does that mean to me? To change my driving habits. Does it catch your attention?

  • Rhythm: These are all things to think about when making your selection. Does the slogan have a melodious sound. Would you like to hear it said over and over again?

  • Global reach: Does the slogan apply to a large region, countries, people in a meaningful way?

  • Length: Is it short and pithy or will a lengthy phrase do?

  • Comments: Please comment below if you think of other good criteria to judge the slogan.

Emma Albertson, daughter of Chris and Traci Albertson of Russellville, submitted the winning words. Emma is a fifth-grade student in Stacey Weible's class at the Immaculate Conception School.

Slogans Are Marketed On Many Specialty Items

Even Grocery Bags! Just look at the Earth Day Groceries Project

Whether they are slick and professional or primitive and childlike, slogans make an impact. The Earth Day Groceries Project is an easy, cost-free environmental awareness project that teams up youth and grocers to spread the message of Earth Day. To participate, teachers simply borrow paper grocery bags from a local grocery store. Students decorate the bags with environmental messages about reuse, recycling, wildlife, etc. The bags are then returned to the grocery store, and on Earth Day, April 22 of each year, customers receive their groceries— along with the message that kids care about our environment— in the decorated bags.

Canadians Have A Great Attitude

What do you think of this slogan? It a conversation between your mum and you. What a great image.

"It’s your mother calling.DON’T KEEP HER ON HOLD."

Millions of Canadians from every walk of life are concerned about pollution and environmental degradation.

A thorough job on explaining Earth Day slogans - meanings, call-to-action, and history. You're right that some slogans hold more meaning, which could motivate more people to care about our envirnomental problems and take action. Thanks for sharing all this!

Hi Jennifer ~ thanks for commenting here. Each idea has a special or different meaning based upon a person's individual experience. Right now I know a lot of people are concerned about THE BASICS - Air we breath and the water we drink. If that is contaminated, then everything else is too. That trickles down to our food and water supplies, then goes into our lungs and other organs. Now, you see why we have rampant disease and lowered immune systems. We must take action now! Take care, Debby

Excellent hub on Earth Day Slogans and Earth Day Birthday! It's funny because reading this made me more aware of how many things I am already doing to consciously contribute to our environment, which I've giving myself props for! This reminds me of exactly why I've enjoyed recycling for so many years - because I feel like I'm making a difference.

Hey, if it feels good then do it and taking positive actions to help our Earth definitely feels good - It's a Win-Win for you and our Earth...All Good Stuff!!

Dear JoLynn ~ What a joy to have so many people comment on this hub. Bringing thoughts to consciousness puts them up front and center. Sounds like you are already doing that and you need a pat on the back. I find it easy to forget to turn out lights and presently making a conscious effort to do that every time I leave a room. Win-Win for all! Healing the Earth Means Healing the Self -- Oh! maybe we can add that the list? :-) love, Debby

Earth Day: Love it or leave it.

;)

Debby Bruck profile image

Debby Bruck Hub Author 20 months ago

Hello Nicomp. Interesting comment. I'm not sure how people would take such a slogan? There might be many connotations to Earth Day: Love it or Leave it.

Does this mean that people should participate in the Earth Day events if they love the activity, or not participate if it is of no interest to them? Does this mean that people should not be living on Earth [how would they do this - commit suicide?] As people who do not like where they are living, the response is to say, "move to another country." However, we are all living on this earth and cannot just "leave it".

Is there a citizen of this earth who should not be a responsible care-taker and be considerate and concerned about the place we call home? Thanks for participating in this conversation.

nicomp profile image

nicomp Level 6 Commenter 20 months ago

Hi Debby, I think that the point of a good slogan is to make everyone think. Instead of writing an in-your-face catch phrase with an unavoidable concrete meaning, I chose to compose a bon mot that offers many nuances. There's something for everyone to enjoy. The tree-huggers can find deep meaningful sincerity and the evil corporate industrialists can latch on to a dose of cynicism.

This is such a crock, this is all a way to control and make the powerful more powerful. Take care of the earth, lol, just recycle and don't litter, because tge earth is not environmentally in danger. Things change due to global processes, also known as "natural causes." Paper bags are really the most "green" in the end any way, they are recycled by people 72.7 percent more often than plastic bags and only require 1-5 for most shopping trips. So they are more expensive by .25 cents than plastic, but, you use 10-40 plastic bags per trip on average so they add up more. Reusable is good if you want, but, I say make paper bags the only option and allow people to bring their own if they want.

Debby Bruck profile image

Debby Bruck Hub Author 8 months ago

Hello Ryan. I really don't understand your emotional response. I think that using paper bags from quick growing tree farms can be very environmentally friendly. I think using renewable cloth bags an even better solution. I'm against using plastic products whenever possible. They contribute chemicals, phyto-estrogens and biphenol-A which have negative health consequences. I agree with your last statement, too. Have a Renewable Earth Day!

Great ...loooong hub! I hate the fact that we are pst the point of no return for animals nearing extinction. Humans take too much for granted and are lazy. A farmer in Africa will kill a Cheetah for preying on his cattle as its easy. The Cheetah was there first. This is all too sad to comprehend really!

Brilliant hub. I belong to Greenpeace who try to stop things like drilling for oil in the Arctic and banning loo paper using Indonesian forest trees that are cut down to be replaced by palm oil plantations. There are tigers that die when these forest are destroyed. In NZ there is a dairy company that imports palm oil kernels for cattle feed. I have told a cousin he's indirectly destroying the Orangutan's home and soon they will only be in zoos.....he said nothing...cos its happening somewhere else and hes rich and while the palm oil kernels suit him now he will keep on. The same dairy company keeps increasing the price of milk so that its cheaper to buy fizzy drinks for poorer families and now diabetes will be an issue in the future. Big companies trash the world for profit.

Anyway great hub, voted you up and awesome!

Hello Nature ~ You sound very, very involved with taking care of mother earth, her plants and wildlife in the ocean and on the land. Thanks so much for contributing your knowledge and opinions. Those of us who care about our actions find it strange that others do not take stock in the small things we can do to improve the world, whether near or far. Just continue to be a model and it will rub off. Blessings, Debby
