Home Care for Sprains and Sports Injuries
When a person is versed in homeopathy they become strong in their belief that the body has the wisdom to heal itself. Whether it is to spike a fever to create an unfavorable environment for germs to multiply, or to experience soreness after an injury to give time for the muscles and tendons to heal.
We all experience injury from falls, over-lifting, over-work, and over-stretching when over enthusiastic about playing ball, tennis, running or any other sport. We are inspired when Springtime comes to go outside and really work on self improvement.
Yet, when we do not do physical stretching to prepare the body, or spending too much time or pushing oneself too hard then the body will pull back and respond in a number of ways.
Today, we will concentrate on the physical injury of a strain. When we apply too much force upon the limbs, ligaments, and muscles that attach to the bones and joints. This can occur with a straight force or twisting motion, as when playing tennis. Sometimes the strain can occur from an awkward movement and pulling the muscle in a way that is not expected or unnatural.
Even the voice can experience a strain from screaming too much at a sports event, singing too long in the chorus or for cheers, going to a range that is unaccustomed and too far a strain for the tone of the voice muscles.
If you think about it, we also strain our eye muscles by staring at the computer screen too long, especially when we don't blink and wet the eyes. We strain the eyes when we do close up work like sewing, intense reading, or miniature work, or driving long distances in the car.
We can also strain our neck muscles when sitting in the wrong position for too long, or when we wake up and say, "Gosh! I must have slept funny" and then you can barely move your head.
With the computer use, we can also get carpal tunnel syndrome in our wrists and forearms and again, strain muscles from over use and repetitive motions.
A major type of sprain and strain to the body is tendonitis
We know that inflammation can cause pain and heat to tissues and cells in the body. It is a reaction to some irritation. The tendons that run throughout the body are composed of fibrous tissue cells that connect like rope or cords from bones to muscles.
Tennis elbow (epicondylitis) was first recognized by doctors more than 100 years ago and it is estimated that up to half of all tennis players will suffer from the condition at some point. Tennis elbow is the inflammation of the tendons in the elbow area and is caused by overuse and injury. Tennis elbow almost always effects the tendons out the outside of the elbow.
Treatment often consists of Rest, Applying Ice or Heat packs, and/or keeping the body part immobile or even consistent gentle movements.

A FEW BASIC HOMEOPATHIC REMEDIES
HANDY FOR ANY SPRAINS OR INJURIES ~~>>
Calcarea carbonicum: Sometimes we can determine the correct remedy for the body type. When the person's appearance is on the heavy side, with un-toned muscles, fair skinned and tendency for flabbiness and sweating, especially on the head at night. These Calarea types typically feel chilly and have weak ankles in general, so twisting, turning, or spraining is commonplace.
Arnica montana: At the onset of injury every homeopath or home care person reaches for arnica from their home remedy kit. It is a great remedy for shock and trauma after a slip or fall. Usually called for when their is a black and blue area that does not want to be touched. Arnica ointment may be applied externally, in addition to taking pellets by mouth.
Bellis perennis: Super remedy for stretched ligaments, and well known to help woman after giving birth when there has been great strain, force and effort to deliver a newborn. The muscles feel very sore. Strangely, we learn that this remedy favors left-sided injuries, and there could even be swelling with the inflammation.
Rhus tox: This is wonderful remedy for muscle over-use, like when you have moved into a new home or apartment and just carried a ton of boxes up and down. This remedy is great for those over-lifting strains. A hint, is that this is an acute type remedy for the Calcarea carb personality type. So, after rhus tox, it may be appropriate to follow up with the calcarea. The rhus tox injury may feel like a stiffness that hurts painfully on initial movement, but as the muscles loosen up they feel okay. Then after too much movement, they will return to the painful condition again. So, you can think about sitting in one place for a while and how stiff you feel when you first get up. Rhus tox is wonderful for arthritis symptoms when those ligaments and muscles feel a strain from wet weather, too.
Bryonia: A great remedy for when any minute or tiny movement of any kind causes extreme pain. After that fall, sprain or trauma the person wants to keep perfectly still, even to lay in the dark and not be bothered by anyone. In addition, by lying ON the painful side this is even better because then the area will not be moved at all. The bryonia types can be quite thirsty.
Ruta graveolens: This remedy is one that I automatically think of for those sports strains and sprains to ligaments. Below is a full report on the application and benefits of ruta. It is also a lovely plant to have in the garden.
Ledum: When there is severe bruising and haematoma this remedy that is from the rosemary plant can be applied externally and taken internally as pellets. Ledum has a particular sensation of pain shooting or moving upwards; like from ankle up the leg to calf or knee. It is especially useful for after a puncture type wound.
The beauty of homeopathy is the many choices for each condition. It is best to match the sensations and symptoms to the closest matching remedy. Take only one remedy at a time and watch its action before moving on to another remedy.

A Little Bit About Homeopathy
Homeopathy has been practiced over 200 years in many countries around the world. There are foundation principles explained in Hahnemann's ORGANON OF MEDICINE.
The principle of "likes cures likes" helps explain why we are matching symptoms to a particular remedy that will exhibit these same symptoms in the injured individual.
The minimum dose means that you need the smallest possible amount necessary to stimulate the body to react and promote the immune system to work toward cure.
Ruta Graveolens is a strongly scented evergreen shrub which has many homeopathic medicinal uses. It belongs to the family Rutacea and is about 20-60cm tall. It is commonly seen in Mediterranean region, Macaronesia and Australia. The leaves are blue or green in colour and it is bipinnate, or tripinnate with a feathery appearance. The flowers are yellow in colour with 4-6 petals and 1 cm diameter. The fruits are 4-5 lobed capsules with numerous seeds.
CULINARY AND NUTRITIONAL VALUE
Ruta Graveolens is been widely used in Middle Eastern Cuisine in spite of its bitter taste. The leaves and oil are used in many beverages e.g.: Italian grape spirit. It has also been widely used as an insect repellent because of its strong pungent smell. The oil has been used as a fragrance ingredient in cosmetics such as soaps, creams & lotions.
MEDICINAL USES
Ruta Graveolens contain a number of active compounds such as flavonoids, alkaloids, coumarins and essential oil. Rutin a flavonoid present in it has the ability to decrease blood capillary permeability and fragility which is concerned with its eye action. Alkaloids and Coumarins present in it have antispasmodic action. Ruta Grav is an excellent remedy for pain and soreness in the bones, joints, tendons, and cartilage. International Academy of Classical Homeopathy, Greece explains detail about its clinical power to overcome degenerative problems in the knees. Ruta Grav is used as a 1st Aid treatment for sprains, injuries, strain, bruises bones, pulled ligaments. Sprains or fractures can also be well treated using Ruta Grav. It is also a good remedy for ankle sprains, soreness in the feet, ankles, achilles heel, and lower back pain.

Hey Debby that was an amazing read! Another feather in Debby's hub- crown! :-) Well, certainly the pain alleviating medicines in homeopathy have lot to do but have given little less attention in face of chronic malady treatments. Symphytum is an addition to above listed medicines I would say. Helps great deals and even orthopedic surgeons use Symphytum in homeopathic potency.
Great article Debby - I have experienced the effects of the marvelous Ruta on more than one occasion and wish more people would be open to try these simple, easy to use, cost effective forms of health care.
I also broke my thumb a few years back and the hospital told me that I would definitely need physical therapy (due to the location of the break) - however after using Arnica AND Symphytum my break healed so well, the doctors were amazed - in half the time they expected AND no physcial therapy required.
Great job Debby ! I am so impressed with all of your work. You are bringing such value and education to so many. Keep up the great work.
Stacy
Thank you for the article.
I had tendonitis in my hands due to RSI (Repetetive Sress Injury) caused by excessive typing.
I had run around allopathy doctors for 6 long years.
Bellis Perennis had literlly freed me in a week from that suffering.
I tend to use Homeopathic remedies for almost everything as it is a very healthy alternative.
Deb,
The timing of seeing this could not have been better. I had two surgeries over the Christmas holidays to repair/rebuild a compete rupture of the scapholunate. Now in a cast for 6-8 weeks I just returned from the health food store with some Ruta. I will post an update when I know my prognosis. Thx!
Can anyone tell me if Rhustox 30C would be more appropriate for systemic tendonitis, (enteritis inflammation of muscule, tendons attached to bone)than Ruta Gravs.
wow! thanks for thi gret new articl about this hurb in hom

Thanks Debby Bruck, I enjoyed reading this hub and it surely can serve as an encyclopedia of natural cures. About arnica--I remember when I was a ranger in Rocky Mountain National Park back in the late 50's and early 60's I learned from an old Ute Indian that heart-leafed arnica has natural oils that are great for relieving rheumatism.
