FRACKING IN NORTH CAROLINA - ACT NOW!

Fracking Just Too Dangerous Petition | As the North Carolina legislature prepares to legalize fracking, we must consider the proximity of The Shearon Harris nuclear plant. Do we want to see a repeat of the Fukushim Meltdown in our state? Read all about the potential for earth shifting earthquakes. What will this do when proposed Chatham County Frackers drill less than 15 miles from Shearon Harris?

On January 22, 2010 officials at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission announced that the electrical generator from the damaged Unit 2 reactor at Three Mile Island will be used at Shearon Harris. Not only does the NC legislature want to approve fracking near the population centers of Raleigh, Durham, Cary and Chapel Hill, it risks water contamination, methane gas pollution and destruction of roadways that will carry thousands of truckloads of chemicals and water to pump millions of gallons deep into the earth. We must stop this insanity. SIGN THE PETITION ABOVE

Fracking Hearing Draws 600 Hundred | Opponents and supporters of hydraulic fracturing made their cases at a public hearing in Sanford on March 20, 2012. Those who wish to speak out can attend the upcoming meetings scheduled. No program that instituted fracking in any state has really protected our water, air and land.

The Next Generation
I recently attended a religious ceremony for a young 12-year old girl who's name, Nehamah, means "comfort" in Hebrew. She gave a compassionate, intelligent speech about the meaning of water and our connection to this vital life-giving natural phenomena. She explained how religious people equate water with the words of Torah [The Five Books of Moses] using metaphors like heavenly energy falling to earth as rain. These water droplets add up and become streams, rivers, lakes and finally oceans. She described in poetic terms the fine line between Noah's flood and G-d's ability to provide an appropriate amount to sustain, cleanse and purify life.

The Number 40 Represents A Test and A Cleansing Period

Even though this well-educated young lady spoke eloquently about water, its spiritual history and her personal connection through biblical stories, she may not know about something happening in her own backyard. We call it fracking, the mining of gas from shale rocks. And, as she spoke about Miriam, the prophetess, for whose sake the Hebrew people received fresh water 'from a rock' during the 40 years wandering through the desert to the promised land of Israel, I thought of fracking. The maxim, "You can't get water from a rock" also came to mind. How many generations must pass before we make choices that will be kind to the earth and kind to each other?

  • The measurement of the cleansing spiritual bath - the mikvah - 40
  • The number of Noah's flood - 40 days and nights
  • The years wandering the desert - 40
  • The number of weeks gestation for a baby - 40
  • Water is a feminine energy force
  • When Miriam died in the desert, so too did that rock stop giving water.

Getting Water From A Rock | Only Moses and Aaron Can Do That Safely
And now we try to get water from a rock, and unfortunately, we will end up killing ourselves in the process. Do you believe the gas industry has a method to extract this gas "safely?" Think again. I said only Moses and Aaron could hit the rock and have a clear stream of fresh water to quench the thirst of the community. But, even they had their troubles when this act was done improperly!

We Seem To Have Sunk To A New Low

We can only drink pure unsalted water to sustain human life. Polluted water means we have a polluted spirit. So many ways mankind has dumped effluent and wastes into our water ways. The corrupt continues this practice, due to greed; and yet, sometimes people actually feel they do good without realizing the greater negative outcome. Are they receiving tampered facts and figures? Are they fooling themselves? Not concerned with the contamination and consequential harm to human life, they concern themselves with jobs, financial gain and providing an abundant energy source. Have they calculated into their figures the total effects of killing living organisms, or the enormous cost of causing sickness? That, I say, does not outweigh the benefits to economic development.

Can Fracking be connected to the "Strange Sounds Around The World : In Sky, On Earth, Underground?"

As industry continues to drill holes underground like voles, moles and other rodents that dig tunnels in agricultural fields or yards, we can possibly see repercussions. Do you notice the word "percussion" within this consequential result of digging underground? As the earth starts to collapse, we could be creating a fragile earth that begins to moan and grown. As this sound occurs deep within the earth, the hollow whining might help explain these strange earth sounds.

I'm not sure anyone else agrees with this hypothesis. However, if these noises and sounds portend the future and are warning signs then we had better start to evaluate our methods of obtaining energy from the earth in this way. Further information below discusses the potential for creating earthquakes.

With the quick influx of fracking, the marketing by lobbyists and bribery to representatives must be exposed. The public must speak out, vote their hearts, blog, and call up representatives and leave a message.

A huge list of negative outcomes will be the result of the fracking industry such as the release of methane gas which would be much worse that pig farms.

Late Breaking News About New Years Earthquake in Ohio

Chicago Tribune | Will we see more man-made earthquakes around this country as a result of making the earth more fragile? When we allow drilling into the ground to explore for oil and gas via the method of fracking, then we will be susceptible to unstable land layers. We cannot wish away or brush away a 4.0 magnitude earthquake. So far acti five deep well sites in Youngstown, Ohio have been

A 4.0 magnitude earthquake in Ohio on New Year's Eve did not occur naturally and may have been caused by high-pressure liquid injection related to oil and gas exploration and production, an expert hired by the state of Ohio said on Tuesday.

Ohio's Department of Natural Resources on Sunday suspended operations at five deep well sites in Youngstown, Ohio, where the injection of water was taking place, while they evaluate seismological data from a rare quake in the area.

States Where Fracking Will Devastate The Land and People

Pennsylvania, New York, West Virginia and Ohio

You might say, why worry, if it is not happening in your backyard?

Just remember that we are composed of many states bound together. The soot, toxic dust, contaminated water ways all move between state lines, down mountains, across plains, into the oceans, up into the atmosphere. We are ALL affected.

When lives are at stake, then entire families must suffer. We Americans are mobile and your friends and family may be living in many states that will be affected by this industry. We are the family of mankind.

You might ask, "Is Fracking Even Worse Than Drilling?"

William Fisher responds to this question with an emphatic, "yes!" Why, because they essentially are different forms of drilling. One being implemented near the ground's surface, the other digging like a deep root tap into the bowels of the earth and then spreading outward.

The authentic term for 'fracking' is hydraulic fracturing. In this process, the plant injects tons of good water and a blend of toxic chemicals into reservoirs to fracture shale rock, which allows gas and oil to escape. The robbing Peter to pay Paul philosophy of wasting so much fresh water to capture some of this energy source, gas/oil, doe not equate. In addition, the process spoils the once potable fresh water, which we know will become more scarce.

Tip of the Mitt
Watershed Council

The Northern Michigan Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council, founded in 1979, leads the nation in awareness, education and action to protect their state counties' resources: Antrim, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, and Emmet Counties.

How Deep Is That Well?

Well, we are talking 5,000 to 10,000 feet deep! The previous fracking industry methods cannot be compared to the destruction and rape of the land next to the modern method of horizontal rilling and multi-stage fracking. We cannot simply do a fracking 'recall,' as in the medical and pharmaceutical industry [which also pushes drugs to market before they are definitively determined safe.] Once the damage is done, there is no undoing it.

The Water Shed Council States:

"Pennsylvania, state regulators found that gas drilling using high-volume fracking has caused contaminated drinking water, polluted surface waters, polluted air, and contaminated soils. Fracking uses hundreds of undisclosed chemicals, which are mixed with water and pumped underground, directly through aquifers, to fracture rock. The cocktail of chemicals used in the fracking process is “undisclosed” from the public because it is considered to be a trade secret and proprietary information. We do know some of the individual chemicals used in fracking operations and, while these make up just a fraction of the total materials in the fluid, they include recognized carcinogens and hazardous materials such as hydrochloric acid and ethylene glycol."

North Carolina Fracking News
I just received a phone call from NC Environment asking for another pledge this year.
The gas companies want to do more fracking than ever. In NC a Free testing program, which would identify levels of methane, chemicals and compounds present in the water, is available for land owners and will help the final analysis with facts and figures regarding contaminated drinking water. As a precaution, some energy companies have supplied households with bottled water deliveries or potable water storage tanks. Doesn't that tell you something?

What's Happening In Montana?

The Fracking Industry Has Non-Disclosure Protection | A source of national concern by educated citizens and elected officials in all states may have a chance to get full disclosure if a bill sponsored by Bozeman, Montana, Senator Bob Hawks, passes to force the oil and gas industries to disclose all the chemicals used in processing, which at this time is not public information.

What's your opinion? Vote in the Poll Below. Then add your comment to explain.

Does industry have to right to keep their intellectual information secret? Is there a difference between learning what chemicals go into the earth during the fracking process and the ingredients that coka-cola mixes into their secret formula?

Public Citizens, Counties and States Have a Right To Know

Should the proposed disclosure bill pass the Senate?

  • Yes. Full disclosure of potentially harmful chemicals in the air, earth and water are a fundamental right.
  • No. Business and Industry has a right to protect their intellectual property.

A desperate world led by greedy people tries to grab the last of the fossil fuel from the Earth by this criminal process. They know full well it contaminates water table, rivers and streams. And that it causes dangerous land subsidence. It is only marginally profitable, but still they carry on.

We have this in Britain now and there was an outcry in the House of Commons two weeks ago about it. The jury is out on what will happen, but, as usual, I suspect 'big money" will get its filthy way.

You have written a marvellous article about this dangerous industry...Bob

Debby, I've been reading a lot about fracking in the NJ DE area... and apparently no one really wants people to know about the dangers of fracking. When ever I mention anything about environmental issues, people say, oh another tree-hugger... ot American was build by free enterprise... This planet was given to us, and we should care for her. It's the moral and ethical thing to do.

very informative hub and interesting start coming with the religious aspect. Fracking as become a huge issue over the past few years and will only become more of an issue in the future as more companies turn to natural gas, especially Marcellus shale in the Eastern United States. Many argue that fracking does not do anything to ground water or aquifers however all these studies are in theory and not in practice. A study out of the UK even links fracking to small earthquakes! voted up!

Hello Debby, first I have to say my husband works in the oil industry. That being said, I have been attacked in my hubs for not supporting what my husband does to keep our family in food and college. When we met in grad school, we were both into solar. But then Carter lost and the energy field narrowed to oil and gas and coal... So yes, he got a job in non-renewables.

I know something about fracking and as you note from where the writers of this disclosure legislation originate, i.e., two reps from my state of Colorado, there are lots of concerns about it here. Last week, Wyoming's Wind River Basin reported a study showing people in that state were becoming ill due to fracking leaks. I don't know if you are following this or not, but I asked a geologist about it and there, the problem is shallow wells. These tend to be more difficult to regulate, as there are surface ponds that hold the water that comes up and out of the well.

The industry is working on methods to eliminate chemicals from the process. Yes, I believe they do know the problem, but have been so enthused about another issue- lessoning our dependance on foreign oil. There are definitely jerks in every industry, and greed, etc. But there are also guys in the oil business who got into the industry like my husband because they loved the land- geologists, geophysicists, who loved rocks, etc.

So consider this, we are all part of the greed contained within this industry. If gas goes up at the pumps, do we rejoice and say, Yay! We are paying more because getting oil out of the ground in the US costs more than imported oil from the Middle East or Venezuela? Nope. We think with our pocket books and blame the oil industry for our dependancy. Are we willing to forego driving or flying or plastics or... check out this list of products we enjoy, made from petroleum: http://www.ranken-energy.com/Products%20from%20Pet

Okay, so am I saying I am ignoring the fact that we are polluting our country, causing global warming, destroying our beautiful earth? Nope, not saying that either. I agree with the legislation and the push to make oil and gas companies reveal their chemicals. I support alternative energy sources and pray every day that oil will become so expensive these sources will become viable- low cost oil immediately discourages the development of alternative sources. Because the public stops caring once gas prices go down!!! Again, we live in a me,me,me world! Blame someone else, forget about the world situation, just give me cheap gas so I can carry on living as I choose. I have a right, etc.

I love your hub. I love your perspective. It is all so simple, when we can blame Big Oil for polluting water. But as much as your words lighten my heart and remind me that there are still activists in the world, who believe as I once did that it was someone else making the problem, I know the problem is mine and yours until we stop driving or using any of the products mentioned in the link.

Taking responsibility for this, and caring for others like those in Wyoming who are suffering health issues so that WE can drive... well, I thank God for legislators like Diane DeGette who put forward legislation like the one you listed above. And I encourage everyone to call their Reps and Senators to make sure it passes, above the heads of powerful lobbyists.

Dear Story [Sorry that I don't know your name] ~ I agree with every single one of your points here and that is one reason I've written this hub. If I do nothing else, at least I've spoken my peace and informed the public about what is happening in our country.

If you read some of my other articles, you will definitely know that I conserve, reduce, recycle and practice sustainability. We vote with our pocketbook and that makes a huge statement. I've been screaming from the rooftops since the 1970's when our country had long gas lines and we needed to stick with the program to develop and institute environmental practices to make this country energy independent.

I do believe we have the technology, but look at what happened! Can you believe not too long ago we went from the fuel efficient Volkswagens to the gas guzzling Hummer and SUV. Of course, we also need to manufacture more products at home, instill pride in our skills and build towns and cities that create community.

We have a long way to go. This article does not intentionally pick on any industry, however, those making the rules, have the influence, drive the industry and government must take a step back and work toward a better future, not to the first quarter and profit margin as the ultimate goal.

I want to thank you so much for jumping into this discussion. We need all voices. Blessings, Debby

P.S. Thank you also for informing us about fracking in your location. I was shocked to here about the fracking going on around the world in Canada, British Columbia, Quebec, Wales UK, Sydney Australia, Karoo, South Africa, Nova Scotia, New Zealand, New Brunswick, Botswana, and Rhine - Westphalia Germany. This does not concern only America, but the whole world.

Yep, Debby, it is a travesty. I got into environmental issues as a high school senior and actually went to grad school in Energy Resource Management in 1981, hoping to become an information specialist at SERI in Golden, Colorado- Solar Energy Research Institute. Sadly, Carter lost and Reagan diverted all these renewable energy research funds to Silicon Valley. SERI nearly closed its doors, but certainly could not afford to hire me!!! Happily, we now have computers, so we can continue the track on a global scale. Perhaps there is method to what appears madness?

Deb,

first off- i still dont believe you are near 58!!!

secondly I worked for 13+ years in the environmental industry specifically concentrating on subsurface investigation and remediation of the suburface.the key tho injecting anything into the ground is getting what you want injected BACK OUT. when we designed our systems we had to make sure what went in 80-95% had to be recaptured by various means - no only would that be better for the environment - it would be better for the companies- although- the gas capture curve is asymptotic and eventually becomes. i am not the biggest fan of fracing but i am sure- it can be done in ways tht are safer and more cost effective but slower yet less cost effevtive, it may be years to do the right thing-may not come to pass until the subsurface gasses are economical to .

Hello Tom ~ I appreciate your point of view especially because this area comes from personal experience working the earth. Do you think that a cost effective, safe method of fracking, even if possible will be instituted? What would it take in terms of change in equipment, training, research, and then convincing local, state and federal industry and governments? Would the funds involved be better spent developing other forms of sustainable energy technology? Be well, Debby

DB,

We can do this testing will have to be completed on the front end (pre & post drilling research) and additional drill locationsto make it viable for a known formation then capture radii can be generated there fter... per formation..then that drilling info can be extrapolated thereafter-The only way fracing will change is when someone develops a way to do it as cheaply as they do it now - that includes - post drilling remediation of impacted wells-

Hi Tom ~ You then think the drilling can be accomplished safely without detriment to the earth's structure, solidity and foundation, without the use of toxic chemicals, and gas leakage into the water aquifer and the rock formations; as long as a industry employs a cost effective method to remediation after drilling? I wonder if the technology exists for this to happen? I can more likely imagine taking all that R&D funds and devising passive and active solar, plus thermal heat and even small wind resources for local homes and communities. Learning how to build more efficient homes and offices that retain heat in winter and cool air in summer through modifications. This means investing in the small neighborhoods and the development of cooperatives, rather than pinning hopes of energy sources in big industry to harvest limited resources. I may be a dreamer. Blessings, Debby

tom hellert profile image

tom hellert Level 7 Commenter 2 months ago

Deb,

All the passive energies solar, geothermal and tidal energies are not as advanced in their technology to make it worthwhile or cost effective on a wide scale-besides the solar the other energy systems are too costly to start-up. I also dont think the oil and especially natural gas is a "finite" energy source- I think the earth is constantly "making it". The anoxic conditions that "created" the oil are sworking today as well and the creation of natural gas is easier done because methane is made up of the most abundant elements on the planet. Again to build the homes more efficient is coming as long as it can be done cheaply-I know a new house is more energy specific-efficient than my 154 year old house- The issues with "renewable energies" is that although they are "unlimited" they are rarely constant and never 100% where as col as and the like can be counted on as more reliable- It does noyt have to be sunny or windy for the "non renewables" . but thats just me

Dear Tom ~ Although soil and gas are continually being made, it takes millions of years to produce, which does not match the rate of consumption.

Did you know that solar powered energy technology has grown to gain not only high output, but also means of storage? In fact, homes resell back to the major electric companies and earn money for home owners.

I do believe that one day, there won't be other choices, since we will become smarter and dependent upon these renewable, sustainable sources of energy. But, that's just me. :-) Hugs, Debby

Deb,

There are some theories out there that the oil and gas are created faster and a recharging current reserves in certain aresand that the earth is making the oil ans gas on a daily basis-some of the new theories of oil n gas creation is done via abiotic means AS WELL- meaning the earth is making it... that is an interesting thing for sure

Dear Tom ~ Some theorists say the oil that used to take millions of years to create from the pressure of sedimentary rock, somehow miraculously in this age can be made through some "abiotic" method? Do you mean anaerobic? Well, show me the money! Yours, Debby

Abiotic means without biologic entities involved-

Anaerobic means without oxygen-

For instance

Production at the oil field, deep in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Louisiana, was supposed to have declined years ago. And for a while, it behaved like any normal field: Following its 1973 discovery, Eugene Island 330's output peaked at about 15,000 barrels a day. By 1989, production had slowed to about 4,000 barrels a day.

Then suddenly—some say almost inexplicably—Eugene Island's fortunes reversed. The field, operated by PennzEnergy Co., is now producing 13,000 barrels a day, and probable reserves have rocketed to more than 400 million barrels from 60 million. Stranger still, scientists studying the field say the crude coming out of the pipe is of a geological age quite different from the oil that gushed 10 years ago.

Vensuela had an estimated 99.7 million barrels of oil in 2007 then in 2009 it jumped to Saudi arabian levels of 240 barrels

Heres another article on it

here did it come from- same with US oil reserves they went up---- According to the new report, an updated version of a 2009 paper, the United States’ resources are larger than Saudi Arabia, China and Canada, combined. The report estimates that the U.S. has 163 billion barrels of recoverable oil and enough natural gas to meet the country’s demand for 90 years.

It makes sense-there could not be a rejuvinating oilor reserves that seem to rise everytime we look at em...

Truly fascinating information, Tom. I shall read it all and think more about how this could happen. Off the top of my head, I'm wondering about who provides this information and why they tell us certain items at what period in time to who's benefit. Again, thank you for teaching. Blessings, Debby
