How The Root Vegetable Orchestra Travels And Creates Their Musical Instruments

Vienna's Vegetable Orchestra

A few years ago I watched the vegetable orchestra on YouTube with the fascination of a little kid. If I was a school teacher, I'd have the students make their own instruments out of some vegetable that they would bring from home. The parents and kids could make it into an outing to the grocery store, where they would observe the textures, sizes, colors, skins, shapes and composition of the vegetables they eat. Perhaps it would bring them closer to their food and find them fun and fragrant, as well as investigate their tonal qualities.

The Vienna's Vegetable Orchestra now travels to distant lands enchanting their audience with the unusual instruments and inventive sounds produced during these concerts.

Without further ado, I'd like to present them in concert here on Hubpages.

Here's Your First Taste of Some Sounds

Original Instruments. Original Compositions, Original Sounds

Perish The Thought!

All of the instruments are perishable. They last for a concert and then, I don't think they eat them or cook them, they are tossed. Not in a salad. This means the musicians must go back to the drawing board, the grocery store to select the finest specimens, with the greatest potential for musical sounds, carve, wrapped, test and tap until an entire new line of instruments are ready for the concert.

In other words, the instruments are never the same. Spontaneous and impromptu, they play with spirit and color. It looks like so much fun. Although, we can imagine the art and craft of creation must be time consuming and take quite a bit of skill.

Workshop Creations

Close Your Eyes and Meditate

We are not able to watch the musicians play there instruments. You might as well close your eyes and listen. I felt like I was in a tropical jungle at one point. Move with the music. Techno and more...

The Vienna Vegetable Orchestra Website

So Awesome if you visit their website. Some really cool sound audio files.

They have a CD of music and their calendar of events.

They also do workshops. Maybe one day I will get to see them play live.

Excellent. I'll never look at vegetables the same again. From now on I guess I'll have to tell my kid, "go ahead and play with your food-it may become a career one day."

Great hub!

Hi Richard, You and I think alike. When I see something exciting and what looks like an educational craft, I think of the children and their delight. Do you have the tools to carve out the root vegetables like carrots, rutabagas and potatoes?

Hi Richard. I'm glad you liked it. It is also interesting to read the response to the poll. The results tell us that we will be viewing our vegetables differently from now on, more as "the musical vegetables" which reminds me of "the musical fruit" that makes you toot. [71%] And the Vienna Orchestra will be getting more visitors to their website as people want to learn more about them. [28% of poll takers]

excellent information.

I try to avoid the doctor when ever I can.

herbs are the way of the past and future.

I use feverfew on my annoying migranes.

that along with a good basis of vitimain b2 and magnesium. advil is only needed once in a while.

feverfew also cures my sad(or what was remaining of it)

and most of my stomach woes. it really has been a miracle along with Magnesium. herb also make you feel more in control, because you HAVE to be positive....but herbs and good vibes bring back the health every time!!

How wonderful, fun and unique! I think that kids and adults both could learn to care and enjoy there veggies much more this way too. Not just music here, I can see the usage of a learning and teaching tool from this. Awesome, voted you up here.

Fluffly77 ~ I'm starting to giggle now. You must have read ten hubpages and commented on all of them. So, appreciative! This was not one from the 30-Day Challenge, but simply love the ingenuity and potential for children to learn with parents. Hugs, Debby

So nice to meet someone who is also into orchestral music and instruments. It is amazing what a true musician will use to make music - I'm sending a link to our local music school - it may give them a few ideas. Thanks Debby.

Hello Martie ~ I just got to the computer today. Isn't this truly amazing what an inventive mind can do? Of course, we know that flutes have been made from reed-like natural plants for millennium, but who could have thought up these veggie and fruit instruments?! Thanks so much for sharing. Love, Debby
