When We Vote In America For Change What Does This Get Us?

70

By Debby Bruck

It only takes one minute and twenty-two seconds to watch this movie. then read the message, answer the questions and comment. It will be fun!

What is True Change?

True Change

I saw this video short, which made me take a double take. What message does the creator want us to take home? Is this about what foods we eat and what makes us lazy and fat? Does he imply that we, as a nation, ARE already lethargic, dumb, complacent and obese? Does this cartoon character depict the true American? Does this stereotype characterize how the rest of the world views the people of the United States?

What actions did you expect this man to take when he heard the message come across the speakers of his television. "CHANGE! CHANGE! CHANGE!" Does that mean the change in our pockets? Does that mean change your clothes, your habits, your thinking, and your ways?

Did you HOPE that this one man would get off his butt and exercise? Were you secretly EXPECTING him to throw down the soda and burger in disgust? Could a simple message from the T.V. get a person to take a close look at him or her self? Are we receiving the message and decoding it properly?

Maybe and Maybe Not

It is quite harsh to present a blanket statement that applies to all the people of a country, especially in such a poor light. However, the question about change, makes us do that double-take. Have we truly changed our direction since the election? Have we invested in our children's education and nutritional programs? Have we invested in the clean up of our environment and passed laws to safeguard our natural resources? Have we established programs to create more efficient and safer communities? Have we taken a cold hard look at the politics of pharmaceuticals, special interests, the cost of elections and waste in government?

Or did we just switch the soda and burger from one hand to the other? Republican and Democrat, are they the same thing just from the perspective of viewing from opposite hands?

If you are old enough you might remember President Franklin D Roosevelt's "Fireside Chats." This characterization gives a bit of the feel when you pay attention to the background music and the mumbling voice and image of sound emanating from the White House.

Here's a children's book that might be of interest if you want to learn more about fireside chats.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt for Kids: His Life and Times with 21 Activities

Published by Chicago Review Press (August 1, 2007) as part of their Children's Series, this book will entertain and educate. As this current generation of children will be challenged through economic recession, depression and a global economy, they need to learn some history. Children will be introduced to American history by reading the president's challenges and actions during The Depression and World War II as 32nd U.S. President.

In addition, read together with your children about Roosevelt's family. Won't they be eager to learn about his cousin, President Teddy Roosevelt, the 26th President and his wife, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, FDR's early political career and subsequent 12 years in office during some of the most fascinating and turbulent times in American history. Interspersed throughout are first-hand accounts from the people who knew FDR and remember him well.

FDR contracted polio and his physical disability strengthened FDR's compassion and resolve. In addition, kids will explore Roosevelt's entire era through such hands-on activities as staging a fireside chat, designing a WPA-style mural, sending a double encoded message, hosting a swing dance party, and participating in a political debate.

Franklin D Roosevelt

Perhaps we could learn a thing or two about how a nation was governed and uplifted out of a dark era by listening to the words of that nation's leader. Perhaps it will just be more of the same rhetoric we've been handed since then. Maybe rehashing the words won't make one ioda of a difference. Maybe we need a totally new approach in today's technological society.

Between 1933 and 1944, President Franklin D Roosevelt used the new medium of radio to address the nation. During the Great Depression and the Second World War, Roosevelt spoke to Americans about his plans for economic recovery, the invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany, the attack on Pearl Harbor, and other topics. This book contains the complete text of all thirty Fireside Chats.

I Hope This Was Fun

I realize that this one little film has stirred so many questions that could be broken down into about ten different hubpages or even many Questions/Answer posts. Isn't it amazing one person's creative video can create waves of awareness!?

I'm really looking forward to your answers, comments and rating up below.

I realize that the commentary and questions focused upon the response of the television viewer and we did not even discuss the symbolism of the little flying "CHANGE" buttons.

I welcome some ideas about why there were TWO of them, one hovering over each shoulder? And, what exactly happened when they fell to the floor?

Hi Debbie, I found that video very powerful it had a lot to say and I couldn't define it to eating habits and laziness. I looked at the word impoverishment a few days ago and saw it not from being poor in relation to food and clothing and basic education but more our individuality, our creativity and our freedom. This impoverishment is leading to a loss of spirit, powerlessness, lethargy and apathy. And this also leads to obesity. That's what came across in the video to me. Oh boy, we are in trouble as a race.

The USA is not the only country over-governed and badly administered

Dear Jewels. Thank you for your thoughtful analysis. Parts of my presentation were supposed to be ironic and a bit humorous. I hope that also came through. Otherwise, we are truly discussing a serious issue with the human race today. Blessings, Debby

Dear AllADream74 ~ Could there be 73 people named AllADream that you were number 74? I did not catch your country of origin. Did you explain your view of Americans? It would be interesting to learn how others perceive us at this point in history.

The name is not derived from a base one,I just came up with it.The 74 is my birth year.I am originally from Zimbabwe. My view of Americans is varied. New Yorkers seem to be straight forward and may seem aggressive the first time around.People in San Diego have been super friendly. The people I have known to date on my visits to America have been responsible, hardworking and down right honest.Of course this may be a biased view as I move around in family circles.Generally I have found Americans to be a good people. I once had a break down in a part of Compton,I could not get any help in the first 15 minutes of going around. One person finally decided tohelp and explained that people are suspicious of a "car breakdown" as this is the line employed by drug users to lure people into then asking for money. It was such an eye opener as the attitude of the people there totally changed after the ice was broken.

Wow! This really turns the tables on what the media reports, considering the economic situation. Maybe we criticize ourselves way more than other people. But, this may be the case for individuals who strive to be better people and do good in the world and are harder on themselves than other people.

That's a cool name!

DB,

Interesting hub here I have a dfferent view of..everything- the general media has to say- most of the media are left wingers who hate americas greatness and will print lies running the US down-many countries around the world still like the USA evidently the mexicans love us as they pour through the border to get here ... but thats just me...

Dear Tom. I appreciate that you took the time to visit and read through this hub and all the polls. I'm not so sure you have a different take on this, even if your perspective from one-eye enables you to wink a little. Do you believe the media hate Americans and America's greatness? To which media are your referring? People from India often ask how they can move to the good old USA, so certainly this country is a desirable place.

The situation I perceive at the present time comes from trends relating to loss of freedoms, loss of the economic value of the dollar, loss of the ability to purchase basic needs, loss of healthcare, loss of many to send their children to school, loss of states to maintain a fiscally sound budget and therefore unable to provide basic services. Well, I could go on with that. At the same time that we have loss, the gain in epidemics increases and the monopolies become more powerful and wealthy.

The creator of the video above depicts an individual who represents the people of the country who has become numb, eats salty, fatty, processed carbohydrates and an artificially sweet drink. He does not known how to CHANGE his behavior and habits. The message being sent cannot be received as this person has lost the mental faculties that good nutrition, healthy discerning mind and factual information could provide. He's a hopeless case and the little flittering change birds plop to the ground as their wings have been clipped.

db,

couldnt log in...

but its me

the media I am talking about is the cnbc nbc cnn air americas of the world- their view is that the usa is wrong75-99% of the time when a GOP administration is elected while they give the left a pass on seemingly every dirty trick and back room under the table deal out there. "deeming things passed" not allowing a nre senator to vote because they know how he was going to vote. Theythe dems created a fundamental change in the nations economy and way of life by ramming obamacare down the countries throat!!! but the goP does not have the balls to send a repeal bill up every week as a symbolic if nothing else gesture- as they promised....

DB,

TO BE BLUNT - UNTIL THE GOP GROWS A SET- NOTHING

GOP has to stop worrying about what the lamestream media has to say- they have to stop worring about what DC parties they get invited to and start doing the job they have been elected to do...the American people are speaking- the politiciansneed to start listening and working for "We the People and not They the Lobbyists"

At least thats how I see it "Thank you all and have a great day and God bless America" *Tom waves to crowd & gets off soapbox*

Honestly, Tom ~ I have been against special interests and lobbyists having unlimited sway through funding sources [bribery] to reach politicians [our elected officials]. I do feel that minorities should have their say and that the only way to do this equitably is that everyone gets the same amount of financial support [limited] to get their statements and message to those who make decisions [not behind closed doors] and to the general public. The amount raised and spent on elections undervalues the true needs in this country. That money should be spent on building and improving our independence, rather than putting a person in the white house. There! Now I got the soap box, and it didn't cost a cent. Blessings, Debby

No arguements campaign finance reform is needed for sure- but reform of this nature will be difficult- since the hogs we need to get away from the $$ trough are the ones benefitting from the hog feed money. even then what will be done with the old 527 groups....

Why don't you blast them with the dinosaur's fire spray? I don't have answers, but I'm good at putting forth questions. It will take a change in attitude, determination from disillusioned souls to come to a full stop and turn in a new direction, back track or some strategy. Maybe if we all scream real loud all at once someone will get the message?

We must remember that half of all "change" is change for the worse. I knew a man who was successful, nice family, lovely wife—he changed into a crackhead, then a wife-beater, then a thief, then an inmate. I knew a guy who was he most healthy guy I ever saw and he changed into a cancer riddled dying man in two months. I knew a man who was very hard working and owned a beautiful home and had a ncie savings account but after his wife ran off with her boss and admitted she had been poking him for two years—he changed. He changed and lost everything. He now brags that he gotlifelong government checks for disability at 42 even though the only thing wrong with him is he is lazy.

Hitler brought massive "change" to Germany. Lenin and Stalin brought huges changes to Russia. Chairman Mao changed 30 million people from living human beings to dead ones—after bringing "change" that the Chinese people "thought" they wanted.

:D

Just food for thought.

Debby Bruck profile image

Debby Bruck Hub Author 8 months ago

Dear James. Thanks for the munchies. I think that the 'CHANGE' implied above refers to some improvement, something positive. However, I take your point that Hitler also told the people his form of CHANGE was to improve the status quo, get people to work and out of economic depression. We know only after the fact that was his method to dominate the people and, in his mind, the world.

Saying 'half' of all change is either good or bad, better or worse... hmmm, can ponder that one. If we think that everything is in a state of balance like on a scale, or that the glass half full or half empty, perhaps. If we think that the value and weight of something good may weigh or count more than something negative, just speculating here, than perhaps it is not even steven.

The other part of the equation regarding CHANGE depends upon the perceiver. What may appear positive CHANGE to one person may appear not so in another person's eyes.

Geez, a good number of your friends fell on hard times. Sounds like the story of Job, if these people's lives blew up without finding a cause. We don't have the specifics on how your examples changed exactly. How could this person who had the perfect life change into a crackhead. Something must have happened to flip this switch into a loser thug. How did such a healthy person turn into a dead man in 2 months? And your last example where the wife went off and left him does not tell the whole picture.

The concept here shows how we can all interpret a short symbolic film about life in so many ways. We need to fully explain our definition of CHANGE, whether for positive or negative outcomes, how we see this either making our lives, the country and the world a better place. This hubpages contained an implicit message that REAL CHANGE indicated a change for the better, rather than going down a dark hole that we can dig our way out. Thanks once again for making me rethink this concept of CHANGE! Blessings, Debby
