73Mammograms Are Close To My Heart
As a breast cancer survivor I've had my own personal experiences with mammograms and over the years formed my own opinions. Women have to weigh the benefits and risks.
Listening to the Diane Rehm Show this morning I knew I could not keep quiet about the mammography screening controversy. The more I read, I hear that women are angry about the new Task Force Guidelines.
It is good to air out the arguments on all sides, but I'm not sure we will ever settle on a happy note and make everyone satisfied with the outcome.
Diane makes sure she touched on all aspects of this issue and pointedly asks questions to find answers. You will be able to read the transcript on her site and listen to the podcast. It is a must ‘listen’ to show.
The points of contention that face us today contain these issues:
Is it all about a monolithic system that has been put into place over the years which recommended routine annual mammograms to millions of women beginning at age 40. The new recommendation suggests beginning this type of program at age 50.
PREVENTION:
My definition of prevention is different than the medical system. They consider diagnostic tools and reading clinical numbers as "prevention" to disease. I do not. It is simply a reading. Prevention is taking steps to "prevent" a disease from manifesting. Prevention is a change in lifestyle to create wellness and a strong healthy mind and body.
New York Times | An analysis of data from six European countries suggests that mammography screening has had no effect on breast cancer mortality.
Thermascan Explained By Mercola

TIME WITH YOUR PHYSICIAN
Part of the recommendations are not only to reduce the mammogram but to eliminate the diagnostic instruction for self breast exam each month. Again, I understand that this procedure can cause anxiety. We know stress leads to disease. If every month a woman does an exam and is searching for some malignancy or defect, is it possible that will eventually manifest?
One aspect of reducing the time spent on educating the woman about this important self exam, since a majority of tumors are found in this way, is a time-cost ratio. Are the insurance agencies dictating to the physicians the time spent with their patients? I wonder.
My approach would be to definitely teach women of all ages manual breast lymphatic massage. This technique helps to move the fluid from the breast and does not allow stagnation. If you are familiar with Traditional Chinese Medicine you would know that "stagnation" can also contribute to disease.
It is only after a women has a mastectomy or lumpectomy which may result in lymphedema does she learn about this healing technique. I also feel that self care through lymph drainage enables a woman to become very comfortable and familiar with her breasts so that she would notice any changes in any color, sensitivity, shape or hardness right away.
Dr Mercola has just opened a thermagraphy center because of his belief in the benefits of this type of diagnostic tool.

Breast Thermography Detects Cancer Early
Dr Gupta Reports on Lymphnodes
CNN (Health.com) -- Women with early stage breast cancer that has spread to their lymph nodes may require less extensive surgery than previously thought, according to a new study in the Journal of the American Medical Association. For years, doctors have tested whether breast cancer has infiltrated a woman's lymph nodes by injecting a dye into the tumor and identifying the nodes where the dye appears. If these so-called sentinel nodes don't contain cancer cells, doctors assume that the lymph nodes farther away from the breast are cancer-free too. If, on the other hand, the sentinel nodes are found to contain cancer after being removed and dissected, a patient typically goes on to have most or all of the lymph nodes in her armpit area removed. That additional surgery appears to be unnecessary in some cases, the study suggests. Women in the study who had only their sentinel nodes removed had the same survival rate and were just as likely to be cancer-free at five years as women who underwent the second round of surgery.
Please think twice about having all lymph nodes removed. You may end up with Lymphedema your entire life. A debilitating disease of discomfort, swelling that may spread through your whole body.
Old Technology Used In A New Way
MailOnline | They call her "Maria"
Micrima, a UK company, designed radio wave technology that discerns changes in material density, typically used for detecting land mines on the earth, may portend a safer, less expensive, and better method for all ages.
Safer than X-rays
Authorities rescinded the recommendation for young women to undergo mammograms because of the difficulty in reading scans of dense breast tissue. With this new technology, the digital geographical maps of the breast will more easily show any changes in tissue density. The sixty antennae within the cup help to detect accumulations of blood and water based on the concept that tumors form a network of blood vessels to feed its growth.
Projection For The Future
Technicians hope this technology will prove a better solution for all concerned. With the lower costs, less need for highly trained radiologists to read the scans, improved detection in all ages and tissue densities, they predict "Maria" to be instituted world-wide in just five years.

Dana Ullman has written a new article entitled Doctors Answer Mammogram Concerns
One of his comments to a reader states: Statistics suggest that for every woman between 40 and 50 who is found to have breast cancer, they have to screen almost 20,000 women...and the yearly exposure to radiation increases the number of cancers. Are we creating more cancers than we are preventing? Then, there are those women who are found to have an early stage of breast cancer and who are treated convention ally...but whose bodies may have healed the disease on their own...but now, their bodies are burdened with additional radiation and chemo.
As for prostate screening...you (mellowrant) obviously have not reviewed the literature which has been strongly critical of it in younger ages.
This is my feeling exactly.
The Secret History of Mammography by Devra Davis, Ph.D.n at Huffington Post
We read what we already knew. Four decades ago cancer specialists realized that detection of a tumor occurs up to ten years or more after cancer growth had begun. Before an X-ray can detect that one-cell gone array. In addition, annual radiation testing could itself carry the risk of cancer. Mammography for younger woman has the difficulty in detecting abnormality due the breast density. And, there is a political agenda attached to mammography, too. Devra points out the problems with standardization and testing of radiation equipment [see my article on radiation effects].
She mentions the increase in biopsies, re-testing when exploring for abnormalities. There is also the statistical risk that for each increased X-ray and biopsy there is increased chance of damage to tissue.
Thermascan
What I'm mostly surprised at is the obvious absence of any information about the Thermascan procedure which can detect cellular abnormality years ahead of a mammogram.
A thermascan is completely harmless. It does not crush the breast tissue. It only takes 15 minutes. After holding the hands in ice-water [that isn't fun] a digital photo is taken without touching the breasts at all. The images come up on the screen in living color like a topographical map detecting the areas of heat. The photos are analysed by a trained physician.
REAL PREVENTION
Also absent is the recommendations to take Vitamin D and sunshine and exercise. All three of these items have been shown to reduce the incidence of breast cancer.
Homeopathy
Homeopathy is a holistic approach to healing. When a person chooses to take the advice of a homeopath, they will learn about improving their nutrition, using herbs, and having an in-depth interview to learn about their genetic predispositions, historical background, physical symptoms and emotional stability and outlook and whatever else is of concern to the individual.
An energetic matching remedy is selected to help the person's general constitution. This may be of significant support in general well-being in mind and spirit. Since everything from above comes below. If the spirit is lifted then so the body will also be vibrating in alignment and attunement disabling the ability of disorder and overgrowth of cells in the body.

The New Anti-Radiation Bra | Created by a surgeon who was beginning to see radiation effects!
Just like the dentist who gives X-rays day-in-and-day-out is in the vicinity of radiation exposure, even though behind a shielded wall. Radiation rays are emitted.
They are using this bra to shield the family from exposure when a woman is treated. No wonder the result of all my breast cancer radiation treatments were benign [thanks to G-d] tumors of my thyroid. So many woman now have abnormalities of their THYROID. Even when you go to the dentist you must specifically ask for a lead apron with a NECK SHIELD if you get bi-annual X-rays to check for cavitation.
The Cancer Bra keeps the radiation bouncing around within the woman's body and, I imagine, if they are not under-going treatment the purpose is to shield from outside sources of radiation coming into the breast tissue.
We Are The Guinea Pigs
And with this knowledge, what are the recommendations for annual mammograms? Where do we take it from here? Do we have answers? Who is right and who is wrong? It seems with all medicine and treatments the general population become the guinea pigs. Just one huge experiment and we find out the results many decades down the line.

this is a touchy subject for me my mum died of breast cancer a few year ago she was high risk it was in our family my aunty died from breast cancer and my nah had it my mum had Mammograms all the time this time they found a lump but the so called doctors told her it was fine and not to worry about she went from doctor complaing about her lump in her breast until one my mum beg for help it was to late my mum died of breast cancer I wrote a hub about the saddest day of my life .My point is just because you have a Mammograms dosent mean you are safe Imk still very bitter about this and I guess I always will be .
Great hub my the way .
of course breast cancer is correlated with psychological aspects of the woman. For example, one who is too nurturing, who takes on everyone's problems is at a higher risk. Obviously, lifestyle changes would be appropriate for a woman who displays these characteristics. I believe breast feeding is also a good prevention
Great advice. Thank you for sharing. The more knowledge we have on breast cancer and the treatments there are the better. Lovely hub
Great article Debby. I will have to come back to view the videos. I'm beginning to find my "Fringe-mates" (those of us moving away from Western Medicine thinking.
I am a mammographer. I am good at my job, but I am not mammography's best advocate.
I understand that you don't want to examine your breasts. So don't. Most women don't and this non-compliance is the reason the American Cancer Society and other's guidelines are slowly moving away from the recommendation. Bottom line: education money is better spent elsewhere.
I understand you want to be protected. Wear your leaded bra, although you can't wear it during the mammogram. Request the thyroid shield. We will give it to you. But please keep in mind that the shield may block the very breast tissue that may have cancer lurking inside you.
Regarding thermography. If you want to spend the money, go ahead. But if a tumor is seen in thermography...if it is big enough to produce enough heat to show a positive reading...then it is big enough to kill you. (1 cm in size) That picture up there of a positive thermogram is a breast COVERED in cancer. NOT a fair representation of it's desired message, I am sure.
I do agree with the writer's discussion about prevention. I think there is a whole chapter about nutrition research and advances in cancer prevention that has yet to be properly written. Again, it is a matter of non-compliance. How many women talk to me about her friend or sister or co worker who is/was fighting cancer, while drinking from a "supersize" soda cup, or swallowing that last bite of mass-produced "granola" bar with 23 ingredients that none of us can pronounce?
I am a bit of a conspiracy theorist when it comes to cancer societies and programs. How many people are out of a job when the true link, whether a simple nutrition matter or a microviral anomoly is found, making cancer research no longer needed? I think about this daily. I will keep a job xraying broken bones and kidney stones.
Again, I am not mammography's biggest fan. I am just really good at my job and when you do come in, I will do it with ALARA (at least radiation reasonably allowed) and with kindness and swiftness that you will barely recognize the total one minute of discomfort (15 seconds MAX compression per view @ 4 views).
As a breast cancer survivor, having a mammogram is next on my list for health checkup this year. I avoid them and your hub reinforces my 'why'. I need to get my family to read this hub so they understand my reluctance to go in and get one done.
Debby, I found your article very well researched and full of useful information. After having been falsly diagnosed with breast cancer I've been going for an annual mammogram for the past 4 years. I have recently developed a thyroid problem and wonder if it might have anything to do with the mammograms. The thermoscan seems to be a far gentler and healthier approach. Unfortunately I couldn't find anything about thermoscan in Nova Scotia. I have e-mailed the local breastscreening program with the question and hope that they will consider integrating theroscan to their current mammogram program. Even if I don't get any support I feel that if women are well informed and keep pushing we might be successful in the end. Thanks for helping to keep the public informed.
This is very thoughful of you Debby, thanks. I'll look into the info.
Hi, I was recently submitted to a chest CT scan and am only 25 years old. It was truly done unnecessarily and at the time I did not know much about them to say I didn't want the procedure. Now that I've researched it, I've become very scared of the possible effects this may have caused on my overall health. How dangerous are the effects of one CT Scan? Can I develop cancer because of this?
Mammography, mammograms, and CT Scans help check for the growth of cancer tumors, but may also have repercussions and side effects. Learn your options, like thermography and preventative health care measures. Cancer concerns are a hot topic in current events and news articles.
